Union, New Jersey, January 1, 2009 —Ajay Goyal, MD, FACS, and Dr. Glenn Forrester, MD, general and bariatric surgeons from the New Jersey Bariatric Center in Union, NJ, successfully performed the first LAP-BAND® in New Jersey with only two incisions. This has resulted in less pain, less scar tissue and faster recover to normal activity. The team has now followed with a series of advanced laparoscopic general surgeries using two ports instead of four for the removal of an appendix and single incision removal of gall bladder.

The surgery was performed on a 42-year-old female patient from Brazil at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. The patient experienced minimal discomfort and has a barely visible scar compared to traditional laparoscopic gastric band surgery requiring four to five incisions. Dr. Goyal and Dr. Forrester were able to combine all of the standard laparoscopic entry points into two incisions to perform the LAP-BAND® surgery. The incision was then closed with surgical glue, leaving no other scars from instruments or sutures in the abdomen.
